Presentation Night

Hazelwood Celebrates Best Success Ever

On the 18th November the Hazelwood College Community gathered to celebrate the exam success of its students. It was the best exam year to date with 61% of our students achieving GCSE grades A*-C. In her address the Principal Eileen Lenehan outlined that against national trends of male underachievement we had raised boys’ achievement in GCSE exams by a massive 15%.

It was a night of celebration with the choir in fine voice and the College folk band merrily playing Irish traditional tunes as students tripped up to the stage to pick up their certificates. Ashley Scott, who sat her exams in June, returned from Queen’s University to pick up her four ‘A’ Level certificates, all at grade A. Lee Stitt was awarded the Lord Puttnam Award for Moving Image Arts. Many cups and certificates were handed out.

The Guest of Honour was Alan McBride of the WAVE Trauma Centre. Alan moved the audience with the account of his wife’s death in the Shankill Bombing in 1993. Alan’s message was a message of hope and change. He outlined how people can reject the dead end street of sectarianism and he saluted Hazelwood’s role in educating and uniting the people of north Belfast.

That’s what we do in Hazelwood and we do it well.
