Scoring a Goal for Literacy27th Feb 2009

Scoring a Goal for Literacy
Last year 54% of boys in Hazelwood achieved grades A*-C in PE. This was a 15% increase from the year before. In order to up the ante I boosted boys’ literacy skills during a seven week block of basketball. Yes basketball, but basketball tailored to a programme of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Sport and Literacy
I began by getting the boys to explore key basketball terminology with sport specific pictures. The boys used white boards with interactive markers to write key words and phrases. Frequent question and answer sessions took place in order to sharpen speaking and listening skills. Peer self-assessment strengthened the literacy focus and everything was kept bite-size so no one was overloaded with information. Positive feedback and reinforcement techniques were used to get the boys involved and to demonstrate their understanding of basketball.

It’s a Winner
Introducing a literacy focus in Basketball and PE is a groundbreaking technique that will raise the achievement of boys even higher. If you are interested in our Sport Linked to Literacy Strategies contact me at Hazelwood College.
