EDUCATION Maintenance Allowance (EMA) 2018-19
Could I get EMA?
You can get EMA if your answer is yes to all of the following questions:
- Will you be 16, 17, 18 or 19 on or between 2 July 2017 and 1 July 2018?
- Will you attend a post-compulsory further education course, either full-time at school or for more than 15 guided hours per week at college?
- Will you be studying in Northern Ireland?
- Is your annual household income £20,500 or less, or between £20,501 and £22,500 and there is at least one other young person in your household who qualifies for child benefit, other than you?
What could I get?
You could get £30 per week, paid directly into your bank account every two weeks. This is based on your attendance at school or college.
As well as you weekly EMA entitlement, you could also get bonus payments of £100 in January and June. This is based on your performance at school or college.

You can get an application from the College or download a copy from www.indirect.gov.uk
You can apply before you get your GCSE results or before you’ve decided where you will study.
